Despite receiving mixed reviews and little success at the box office, some comedies have gone on to become cult classics.

As shocking as it may seem, not all fan-favorite films were well-received when they were first released. Many of the most quoted and referenced films today were actually box office flops, or at the very least, extremely disappointing. Others seemed like studio hopefuls that then fizzled out fast during their run in theaters.

However, unsatisfying numbers at the movie theater don't seal a film's fate. Many of those same films have gone on to become cult classics with a legion of fans and some of the most notable pop culture presences today. Others certainly have more of a niche group of followers, but a fervent niche to say the least.

The Producers got a remake in 2005, a Broadway production, and an Academy Award win for Mel Brooks for Best Original Screenplay. However, 1967's The Producers was far from being a stage or screen hit. Critics were heavy-handed when reviewing the film, and audiences found the plot and essence of the story to be vulgar and offensive. It only earned $6,091 on its opening weekend, despite its budget of $941,000.

Despite that, The Producers has held up as a fan favorite, even for Mel Brooks. The exaggerated flare of the '60s may not have held up well when it was released, but its overtly cartoonish styling has kept critics and audiences entertained over the decades.
